Retirees Can Stretch Their Savings In This Affordable Texas Suburb Near Houston

Finding an affordable place to retire without giving up access to healthcare and things to do isn't always easy. However, Pasadena, Texas, is proving it can offer that balance. Two studies published in 2026 included Pasadena, Texas, on their lists of the best places to retire. First, Investopedia named it one of the 100 top places to retire. Using data from sources including the U.S. Census Bureau, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, and the Economic Policy Institute, the site selected cities with reasonable living costs, easy healthcare access, and engaging community activities.

Retirement Living, meanwhile, focused on the Lone Star State to identify the five best cities for someone's golden years, using data from the U.S. Census Bureau, Zillow, NeighborhoodScout, FEMA, NYU Langone Health, and the Texas Department of State Health Services. Using these data points, the study ranked Pasadena as the third-best place to retire in Texas. With 60.95 ranking points (compared with 71.58 for first place and 65.19 for second), Pasadena ranked eighth in the state for affordability.

According to Zillow, the average Pasadena home value was $219,864 in July 2026, compared with the national average of $372,995. Best Places lists Pasadena as 3.1% more affordable than the national average while groceries and utilities are both 3.6% less than the U.S. average. That said, the property tax bills might catch retirees off guard. At an average of 1.81% in 2024-2025, that's the third highest in the nation. The Texas governor, however, is trying to stop charging property taxes to fund schools. If you prefer to rent, a one-bedroom apartment goes for $1,020, on average, compared to the $1,180 average nationally.

Retirement Living awarded Pasadena the number one spot for senior healthcare in the state. Texas cities average 5.9 primary care physicians per 1,000 seniors, while Pasadena has 281.1, providing residents with a wide range of healthcare options. The site ranks Pasadena as the 10th best in livability. Retirement Living awarded livability points based on the percentage of residents ages 65 and older, walkability, and access to green spaces within a 10-minute walk. 

The Madison Jobe Senior Center provides people aged 50 and up with free or low-cost activities, including dance classes, fitness groups, movies, a computer lab, and more. Elsewhere, seniors can stroll the walking trails in the 4,300-acre Armand Bayou Nature Center, go on guided canoe trips, view wildlife, with admission starting at $5.

Attending the Pasadena Livestock Show & Rodeo allows seniors to watch skilled cowboys and cowgirls, tap toes along to live entertainment, and enjoy a BBQ cookoff — celebrating the Texas spirit, choosing from a la carte ticket menu. The city is also home to the annual Pasadena Strawberry Festival, one of the largest and longest-running festivals in Texas, where residents can enjoy live entertainment, local vendors, carnival rides, and community events. Together, all these activities provide opportunities to socialize, stay involved, and enjoy the local culture.
