Forget Florida, Retire To This Southwestern State With Comfortable Weather & Scenic Views

Many retirees hope to spend their golden years in warm weather states, which is one reason why so many flock to Florida. However, if sunshine appeals to you, then you might want to consider New Mexico. According to New Mexico State University, the "Land of Enchantment" averages between almost 3,700 and 2,800 hours of annual sunshine a year and, depending on what part of the state you live in, has mostly mild weather. The state also contains a stunning range of scenic vistas, ranging from underground caves to lofty dunes. New Mexico also boasts 15 national parks, ranging from canyons to ancestral Pueblo dwellings to volcanoes.

Per MoneyLion, a retiree can live comfortably in New Mexico with an annual income of $53,104. Meanwhile, according to the Social Security Administration, the average monthly benefit payment for a retiree, as of January 2026, was $2,071 or $24,852 annually. With that in mind, a couple relying solely on Social Security benefits would hit very close to that annual benchmark and, if sticking to more affordable cities in the state, they could easily expect a comfortable retirement.

Places that retirees should consider in New Mexico include Taos in the north-central part of the state. Best Places notes that Taos has a cost of living that is 4% lower than the national average. With a population around 6,500, about four in ten Taos residents are aged 60 and up, according to Census Reporter, using American Community Survey data. Taos also contains several recreation centers as well as medical centers, giving older adults both a place to enjoy activities and receive quality healthcare.

Retirees might also choose to settle in the gateway town to White Sands National Park — Alamogordo — which is just just 15 miles southwest of the national park's 275 square miles of stunning sand. According to BestPlaces, life is more affordable here: 24.8% cheaper than the U.S. average, to be precise. A single retiree could live here on $2,667 a month, as of July 2026. Housing is especially affordable, with Zillow finding that home values averaged $223,635 in July 2026 while the national average sits at $370,320.

Another scenic town that might cause retirees to forget about Florida is Los Alamos. This New Mexico town boasts three nearby national parks with gorgeous views: Bandelier National Monument, Manhattan Project National Historical Park, and the Valles Caldera National Preserve. Per BestPlaces, Los Alamos is 2.3% cheaper than the national average with utilities coming in 7.1% lower than the national average.
