Two Grocery Staples Are At Their Lowest Prices In Years At ALDI
On September 23, 2026, Aldi announced that it was investing $86 million in lower prices for the fall. According to the company's announcement, nearly one-third of its everyday products are priced lower than they were in fall 2025, including pears, grapes, and Brussels sprouts. Two items stand out: Honeycrisp apples, which have reached their lowest everyday price in more than five years, and Kirkwood chicken breast family packs, which are at their lowest everyday price since 2022.
Honeycrisp apples are priced at $1.99 for a two-pound bag, or about $1 per pound, through at least November 3. According to Aldi, that's 35% lower than last year's price. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, apples cost 34 cents per pound in 1975, which, when adjusted for inflation, would be $2.10 per pound in September 2026 — more than double Aldi's current pricing. For comparison, as of mid-October 2026, Target offered single Honeycrisp apples for $1.39, while Walmart offered three pounds for $3.28.
Meanwhile, Kirkwood chicken breast family packs are priced at $1.99 per pound through at least November 3, their lowest everyday price since 2022. The secret behind Aldi's cheap meat prices is its use of private-label products, which can help the company control costs and keep prices competitive. Plus, stores in the chain don't have in-store butchers or deli counters, which lowers staffing needs and reduces payroll.
Why apple and chicken prices fluctuate
Historically, apples have seen numerous price fluctuations since the 1970s. According to NPR, declining demand from food processors and consumers has put downward pressure on apple prices in recent years. In fact, NPR reported that about 350 million pounds of apples, or roughly 3% of the annual supply, typically go to waste. However, in 2026, per AgWest Farm Credit, processor demand has increased while the apple crop is trending smaller — a combination that could put upward pressure on prices.
Chicken, meanwhile, falls into one of the largest categories of grocery spending: meat, poultry, and seafood. According to Grocery Track, which uses data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, people will spend about one in four of their grocery dollars on meat, poultry, and seafood in 2026. So, when families are thinking about what they spend on groceries, lower meat prices like those offered by Aldi can really grab their attention.
Chicken prices have dipped recently after several years of increases. According to Macrotrends, the average price of chicken in the data series was $1.50 per pound in September 2021, rising to $2.09 in June 2025 before easing to $2.06 in September 2026. In mid-October, Target charged $2.29 per pound for the Good & Gather in-house brand, while Walmart charged $3.28 per pound for its Great Value in-house brand, exceeding Aldi sales prices.
