The retirement prospects in the Sunshine State aren't what they used to be, thanks to rising home prices across Florida. Basic utilities, internet, and mobile phone service cost $197, $57, and $66, respectively, for a total of $320 per month. You'll want to explore your options outside of the city center, where the average rent for a one-bedroom apartment is over $500 cheaper than a centrally located apartment, costing $1,111 per month. As for feeding yourself, according to Jacksonville realtor Josh Rogers, an individual can expect to spend up to $380 per month on groceries.

As per the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTAFLA), a standard 31-day transit pass costs $40. More impressive is the out-of-pocket cost of seeing a doctor, which costs an estimated average of $91. Altogether, this brings the cost of living in Pensacola to $2,125 per month. The cost for a month of groceries is excellent when compared to the previous cities on this list, at an average cost of $346 per month. Where utilities are concerned, a single person can expect to spend $152 per month, while transportation costs average $360 per month. At an out-of-pocket average cost of $232 per month for healthcare, a single retiree could live on $2,183 per month.

According to Alura Senior Living, seniors make up 20% of the population of Rockledge, so you'll also have the opportunity to make lots of social connections in your own backyard. Rockledge is also a city close to everywhere you want to be in the state, with Miami, Orlando, and Tampa all being within driving distance. For example, Rockledge is less than an hour's drive from Orlando, which makes weekends at Walt Disney World with visiting grandkids a viable option. With KFF finding that the average lowest-cost health insurance marketplace gold plan costs $640, the total cost of living in New Port Richey for a retiree is $1,749 per month. That leaves roughly $750 each month for dining out, hobbies, travel, or simply adding to your savings.

New Port Richey, Florida, has plenty of entertainment options for retirees, and with the money you'll save living there, you should be able to enjoy many of them. As per KFF, the lowest-cost gold premium health plan costs an average of $640 per month in Florida. Taking advantage of that would bring a retiree's total cost of living in Cocoa Beach to $1,551 per month. The question of how long $250,000 in savings would last in Florida becomes less daunting when all your basic living expenses total just $18,612 per year. 

Palm Bay is one of the most affordable places to live in Florida, and for a retiree living on a $2,500 per month budget, it's also one of the best places to retire comfortably. According to LivingCost.org, the difference between a one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the city and one in the city center is $28 per month, making a centrally located one-bedroom apartment, which rents for an average of $685 per month, worth the splurge. Utilities cost an average of $151 per month, with reliable internet adding $54 to your monthly payments.

As part of the Space Coast Area Transit (SCAT) system, a regular monthly transit pass costs $42. However, a reduced fare for riders 60 and older brings the cost of that monthly pass down to $21. With the addition of a gold health insurance plan that, according to marketplace data from KFF, costs an average of $640 per month in Florida, it would cost a total of $1,551 per month to retire comfortably in Palm Bay. 

Palm Bay offers a slower pace of life in a larger city where senior care is a priority. Health First Palm Bay Hospital is just one of the primary medical centers in the city, along with a number of other medical facilities serving the area.
