America's New Favorite Convenience Store Isn't Wawa Or Buc-Ee's
Results from the 2025 American Customer Satisfaction Index are in — and, although, on a 1-100 scale, the average brand scored 76, there's a brand-new favorite. Kwik Trip wears the 2025 crown as America's best convenience store with an impressive performance. Besides ranking first with a score of 84, the company also surpassed any other store's improvement percentage at 8% – allowing the brand to move up from its No. 7 ranking in 2024.
One of the country's other top stores — that tied in 2024 for No. 2 – Wawa, received the same score as last year at 82. However, other than Wawa's stable positioning, shifts took place in all of the remaining top five spots. Sheetz improved by 4%, from 79 to 82, moving up from No. 6 to tie with Wawa at No. 2 in 2025. QuikTrip, which ranked No. 2 in 2024 with a score of 81, lost ground by falling 1% to end up at No. 4 with a score of 80. Buc-ee's, which tied for No. 3 in 2024 at 80, also fell 1% to land at No. 5 with a score of 79.
As of May 2025, Kwik Trip, Inc. had roughly 879 United States locations, the ninth most of all brands. Since then, Kwik Trip has continued to expand locations, listing nine new openings in September and October 2025. For comparison, Wawa — ranking just one spot below Kwik Trip in 2025 in satisfaction — is slightly bigger, with a reported 1,117 locations in May 2025, and 11 new expansion locations since. Meanwhile, Buc-ees boasts just 54 locations.
Understanding the financials of convenience stores
Customer satisfaction rankings might not necessarily have as much to do with profitability as you might think. Career site Zippia lists Kwik Trip's total 2024 revenues at $2 billion. However, other reported revenues include Casey's (which ranked No. 17 in satisfaction) with revenues of $14.9 billion; Sheetz at $7.2 billion; 7-Eleven (which ranked No. 16 in satisfaction) at $5.5 billion; and QuickChek at $556 million. According to Statista, the average single convenience store location in 2024 made roughly $1.94 million in sales, while the overall industry experienced a 2.4% sales increase in 2024, per NACS Advanced Convenience & Fuel Retailing. However, not all convenience stores are doing so well, with one convenience brand in particular, Mega Co-op, closing stores after going bankrupt.
It's also worth mentioning that some of the largest sales categories in convenience stores might not surprise you. One core product is cigarettes, with NACS noting average sales of $41,130 per store in the first half of 2023 alone. That said, larger indicators show a decline in cigarette sales growth, which isn't a surprise given the massive cost of cigarettes from an average American consumer perspective. Lottery tickets also fuel convenience store revenues, despite how many states also offer lottery tickets online. Although amounts can vary by state, retails generally get paid a per-ticket commission average of 5% on lottery sales. They can also receive another smaller commission for paying out winning tickets: about 1 to 2%. However, if a store ends up selling a jackpot ticket, they can get a bonus ranging from $10,000 to $50,000.
