Artificial intelligence is all the rage right now, with investors pouring billions of dollars into computer programs that can write prose, create movies, check legal documents, compose computer programs, analyze medical ailments, and hopefully, not try to kill us all off like SkyNet tried to do in the Terminator series.
But one does not have to be an ultra-wealthy tech bro to get in on the AI craze. Robot vacuums have become a hot ticket item due to their ability to move around rooms autonomously with minimal help from humans. They can even recharge themselves. And they can be sold on Amazon for at least $140 each, according to Hustle Life, a blog for digital entrepreneurs.
The ins and outs of selling on Amazon
The robot vacuum is just one of several expensive items Hustle Life's Clark recommends selling on Amazon. Another high demand item Clark suggests selling on Amazon are power tools, which are among the e-commerce giant's best-selling items. Selling your old electronics on Amazon or other e-commerce sites such as e-Bay can also be a viable way to earn extra money, especially if you are about to retire.
But how does one sell vacuum robots, or any other items on Amazon in the first place? Assuming you are not a robot vacuum manufacturer, you will need to register as a third-party seller, which means setting up an account, figuring out a selling and fulfillment strategy, and locking in on a particular product.
And you won't be alone. There were 1.9 million active third-party marketplace vendors on Amazon as of 2023, with each one making an average of $250,000 in sales each year, according to Capital One Market research. Those sellers made up just over 75% of Amazon's net sales for 2023, Capital One added, which amounted to $480 billion in vended goods.
The evolution of robot vacuums
Robot vacuums aren't that new of a phenomenon. An engineer named Donald Moore patented a design for a robot floor cleaner that could vacuum and mop floors. Yet it was not until 1996 that the first robot vacuum, Electrolux Trilobite, hit the commercial market. The first profitable robot vacuum, iRobot Roomba, was unveiled in 2002.
Today, some of the most advanced and high-quality robot vacuum cleaners available on Amazon are listed for sale for thousands of dollars, though individual quality parts and products are generally available for sale for under $300. Yet while plenty of money can be made from selling robot vacuums online, Hustle Life's Clark warns that the market for these AI cleaners is limited.
Should you decide to pursue robot vacuum sales, go for the newer items if you want to sell quality products. Preowned vacuum cleaners may be cheaper, but they become less-effective over time. And in regards to robot vacuums, even refurbished models are far less efficient, come with hardly any tech support, and may also have worn batteries and other parts. As for bargain hunters more interested in buying a robot vacuum than selling one, there are a discount deals listed on Amazon.
