We're talking about car seats. Although regulatory specifics can vary, all 50 states and the District of Columbia require forward-facing child car seats — with dozens of states also requiring rear-facing ones for a certain timeframe in an infant's life — to help keep babies, toddlers, and other young children safe while in transit. Because about 3.6 million babies are born annually in the United States alone, this item can be in great demand even when considering how parents with more than one child may decide to reuse the car seats they already own for each of their children.
Car seats can be expensive with prices for premium models sometimes exceeding $800 in 2025. Plus, because of 2025 tariffs, with more than 85% of car seats made in China, prices on this item are increasing. The reality, then, is that, although parents may prefer to include car seats in the items that they buy new, there may not be enough room in their budgets, thus opening up the market for used car seats. In June 2025, Amazon shows car seats for resale in a range of prices with some going for $155 or more.
Amazon policies for selling car safety seats
Selling car seats on Amazon, though, isn't simple. Because having a safe and secure restraint system is vital to protect babies and young children, Amazon places requirements upon which ones can be sold on their platform. This includes the prohibition of fabric restraint systems in child safety seats.
The listing on Amazon must include the manufacturer or brand name along with its model number. For child restraint systems (either forward- or rear-facing), Amazon requires a Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 13 test report. This can be from either an internal or external lab. The same requirement exists for belt-positioning and backless car booster seats. For an infant carrier that's handheld, besides the FMVSS No. 13 report, sellers must also submit an ASTM F2050-19 report from a Consumer Protection Safety Commission (CPSC) lab. For convertible systems, besides those two reports, sellers must provide an ASTM F833-19 one from an CPSC-accepted lab. The listing of a child restraint system must also come with a manufacturer's statement (their self-attestation) that all laws are complied with in their product and must include lead testing information. Documentation submitted to Amazon to sell a car seat online must be the original, unmodified forms and must match the listing information. Car seat listings on Amazon also need clear images that include the model number, manufacturer name and address, registration card, product labels, markings about compliance, warnings about hazards, and product instructions.
More about selling used items
Selling used car seats on Amazon requires plenty of legwork and paperwork. If this route feels like it comes with more work than rewards, step back and consider personal goals for selling this or any other items. Is it time to declutter and get ready cash? If so, perhaps focus on selling other items on Amazon without the stringent requirements that car seats have. Which items have you decluttered and are willing to sell that come with high demand? These can include electronics, clothing, tools, video games, and more.
Or is the goal to sell household items to get out of debt? If that's the case, consider what possessions might bring in bigger dollars. Perhaps there are two household cars, so one could be sold with the family still having transportation. If someone owes money on a vehicle, all loans on it must be paid off in full before the sale can go through. Then, the family could pay off most urgent debts from the proceeds or at least the whittle the balance down. Selling a car is just one example. Selling collectibles and other higher-value items could also bring in cash to pay down debt.
