Add Money Digest on Google:

If you're a retiree looking to relocate to Colorado, you're far from alone. The Centennial State is well known for its breathtaking beauty. Between its rocky canyons, vast number of lakes, and unforgettable mountain landscapes, there's a lot of natural beauty to behold. The one thing that typically stands in the way for many retirees seeking to move to Colorado is how challenging it can be to find a retirement destination that is both scenic and affordable. Per SoFi Bank's interpretation of Bureau of Economic Analysis and 2026 Missouri Economic Research & Information Center (MERIC) data, the average living cost for Colorado residents is $66,448 per year. That works out to over $5,537 per month, but that's not to say that there aren't places within the state's borders where you can live out a comfortable lifestyle at a lower premium.

Using local pricing information from websites like BestPlaces and Apartments.com, we were able to find a range of affordable Colorado cities where you could feasibly retire for less than $3,000 per month. Aside from being cost-effective, these towns help demonstrate that you don't need to choose between beautiful surroundings, affordability, and a thriving local community. Retirees who move to one of these towns will get access to scenic views without having to break the bank every month. If you're a retiree weighing a move to Colorado, here are beautiful and budget-friendly options.

Grand Junction

If your goal in moving to Colorado is to take in rugged, scenic beauty, then Grand Junction is a quintessential consideration. With a population of 71,827 as of July 2025, per the Census Bureau, this western Colorado city offers access to a wide range of nature-based activities. For retirees who enjoy fishing or cruising around the lake on their pontoon boats, Grand Junction offers decent proximity to hundreds of lakes. As far as recreation on land goes, retirees in the area can enjoy the magnificent views riding along Rim Rock Drive,  or enjoy local food and wine at some of Grand Junction's many vineyards.

With so much going for it in terms of natural beauty, you'd be surprised by how affordable Grand Junction actually is. According to BestPlaces, individuals who live there should expect to spend about $2,900 per month, or roughly $34,800 each year, making the area around 0.9% less expensive than the average U.S. city and 17.8% less costly than other Colorado cities.

For retirees who rent, you should be able to find housing that's relatively affordable. Per Apartments.com, the average Grand Junction apartment cost $1,232 each month as of October 2026. The rental site also determined 33% of renters paid between $1,001 and $1,500 per month. Even so, it is possible to pay far less, as Apartments.com also found that 39% of Grand Junction renters pay $1,000 or less per month. As such, we're confident Grand Junction can work as a beautiful Colorado retirement destination for budget-conscious retirees.

Pueblo

When you think of Pueblo, Colorado, you might envision rocky, desert-like conditions. In actuality, the city is within easy reach of a large reservoir located in Lake Pueblo State Park. The lake is located just a few miles west of the town, offering a refreshing escape for retirees who enjoy boating and other water activities. In addition to its natural features, Pueblo boasted a population of 110,404 in July 2025, per the Census Bureau, and also offers access to a lovely riverwalk lined with a range of restaurants, shops, museums, and art galleries.

For retirees with an eye on their cost of living expenses, BestPlaces estimates Pueblo costs $2,867 per month, per person. BestPlaces also determines that Pueblo cost 9.7% less than the average U.S. city, while also being 25.1% cheaper than other Colorado cities.

One way in which retirees moving to this Colorado town could see significant savings is through renting. According to Apartments.com, Pueblo rent was $990 per month on average as of October 2026. Studio apartments were even cheaper, averaging $894 per month, which certainly supports the website's finding that 60% of Pueblo renters paid $1,000 or less each month. At the same time, 16% of area renters paid less than $700 monthly for their apartments. Between the lower rent and lovely scenic amenities, living in comfort in Pueblo should be well within reach for many retirees.

Montrose

For active retirees who still enjoy hiking, Montrose could be a perfect fit. This Colorado city, which the Census Bureau reports had a population of 21,583 in July 2025, manages to blend the feel of a small town with the rugged outdoor spirit that comes with immediate access to places like the Black Canyon at Gunnison National Park. Moreover, retirees can also check out the desert plantlife preserved in the Montrose Botanic Gardens, or relax by the river at Cerise Park. Montrose is a wonderful representation of what it means to not have to choose between settling in a peaceful town and affordability, offering retirees a chance at both.

Per BestPlaces, retirees who move to Montrose can expect to spend around $2,700 each month to cover living expenses. When compared to other Colorado cities, BestPlaces reports Montrose is 20.8% less expensive. Meanwhile, its cost of living is 4.6% lower than that of the average U.S. city.

Though Montrose is one of the more affordable towns in Colorado, as of October 2026, area rent is near the national average. That is according to estimates by Apartments.com, which determined Montrose renters pay about $1,567 per month. While Apartments.com found a slight majority of locals pay between $1,000 and $1,500 monthly, about 33% of Montrose renters have found living spaces for $1,000 or less. With that in mind, we're confident that retirees should be able to find suitable housing in this charming Colorado town without breaking the bank.

Delta

With a July 2025 population of 9,802, per the Census Bureau, Delta, Colorado, is a great option for retirees who are looking for a walkable town in which to settle down. Delta has a strong agricultural reputation, and might be best known for producing the majority of the region's apples and pears. It has a historic downtown and is locally known for its beautiful murals. And while you'd be hard pressed to find a smaller city, the community still features a bustling scene of local businesses that gives residents plenty of opportunity to engage with and support their community.

In addition to its charm, retirees may also find Delta offers an exceptionally low cost of living. BestPlaces reports the city is 22.7% cheaper than the average Colorado town, and costs 6.8% less than other U.S. cities on average. In total, BestPlaces estimates individuals living in Delta spend $2,667 monthly to cover living expenses.

Retirees moving to Delta could access particularly impressive savings when it comes to housing costs. For retirees seeking a two-bedroom home, the anticipated monthly cost jumps to $1,373 per month, which is still notably less than the national average of $1,667. Apartments.com also found that roughly half of Delta renters paid less than $701 per month. With these cost of living and housing factors, this small community gives entire states with low median rents a run for their money.

La Veta

The tiny town of La Veta has a population of less than 900, making it an ideal choice for Colorado-bound retirees who prefer small-town vibes over more urban areas. Whatever the area lacks in population, retirees will be glad to know it offers access to scenic views, as it's located at the base of the Spanish Peaks. La Veta is also a great option for retirees who love golfing, as the local Grandnote Golf Course offers visitors some of the most scenic 18 holes in the country.

Florence

Florence, Colorado, is within close range of the Royal Gorge canyon, and could be an ideal destination for retirees who dream of scenic views while driving. Though some associate the area with rafting and sport climbing, the retirees who relocate to Florence can still get the most out of the location, even if they're not into such extreme outdoor activities. For instance, antique-obsessed retirees will be happy to know the town is home to more than 100 shops dedicated just to vintage wares, per Florence's official website. The city has a reported population of around 3,800, and is home to a historic and walkable downtown. You'll find a wide selection of restaurants, breweries, and art galleries in the area, all while keeping your living costs manageable.

According to BestPlaces, Florence's monthly cost of living is $2,633 per month for a single person. While that's roughly the same as La Veta, many aspects of life in Florence are more attainable in this more populous locale. Renters here paid about $551 per month for a one-bedroom on average, as of October 2026, with two-bedrooms coming out to just $625. Assuming they plan to spend the recommended 30% of their income on rent, anyone making at least $1,836 per month should find Florence housing affordable. When comparing overall living expenses to those of the average U.S. city, BestPlaces reports Florence is 9% cheaper. Meanwhile, when measured against Colorado as a whole, BestPlaces determined the small town is 24.5% less expensive.

Cañon City

If being surrounded by wild natural beauty is a prerequisite for a move to Colorado, Cañon City is definitely worth considering. With a July 2025 population of 17,030, per the Census Bureau, Cañon City offers scenic views via the nearby Royal Gorge. There, you can walk along the Overlook Loop and take in some truly breathtaking views of the Royal Gorge Bridge and the Arkansas River. For more low-key outdoor recreation, Cañon City residents can visit Centennial Park, where they can enjoy tennis courts, picnic areas, and plenty of walking trails. For those interested in the area's history and culture, Cañon City is also the home of the Royal Gorge Regional Museum & History Center.

In addition to rugged scenic beauty and small-town life, Cañon City is a great choice for retirees seeking a more affordable Colorado retirement destination. As BestPlaces reports, individuals living in Cañon City can expect to pay $2,600 per month to cover expenses. In addition to costing 9% less than most U.S. cities, BestPlaces estimates Cañon City life was 24.5% cheaper than the average Colorado town. Once again, these savings certainly show up in the housing market: Apartments.com determined in October 2026 that Cañon City apartments cost $891 per month on average, nearly half the national average.

Trinidad

It's not often you'll find a town where the streets are paved with red bricks and mountains overlook the downtown area, but Trinidad, Colorado, checks both those boxes. The town had a reported population of 8,091 in July 2025, per the Census Bureau, and it's home to a selection of stunning natural attractions: Fisher's Peak State Park, the second-largest state park in Colorado, and Trinidad Lake State Park, a great spot for fishing, boating, and other water activities, both lie within easy reach for Trinidad residents. Even if you're not interested in water sports or hiking, retirees can still get their steps in via Trinidad's very walkable downtown area, and may also appreciate the Old West feel provided by the town's uniquely beautiful and historic architecture.

According to BestPlaces, Trinidad's cost of living works out to $2,533 per month, per person. BestPlaces also determined Trinidad is 22.4% cheaper than the average American city, while also being 35.6% less expensive than other Colorado towns. Apartments.com's October estimates suggest the average Trinidad apartment is highly affordable: Rent was about $775 per month on average at the time, and had actually decreased slightly from the previous year. With rent prices about 54% lower than the national average, seniors in Trinidad should encounter little issue finding a living space for between $700 and $1,000 per month.

Sterling

For retirees on a budget, we think Sterling may be among the most affordable options in the state. Sterling had approximately 13,054 residents as of July 2025, per the Census Bureau, and is home to the North Sterling State Park and the vast reservoir it houses. The South Platte River also passes through the town, offering a great local getaway for fishing, canoeing, and more. In addition to beautiful outdoor destinations, Sterling has a vibrant local art scene. Retirees will be able to take in colorful murals and unique sculptures, and tour a range of galleries.

Living expenses in Sterling, per BestPlaces, should cost about $2,500 per month for a single person. The area is roughly 32.9% more affordable than the average Colorado city, and 19.2% cheaper than U.S. cities at large. Apartments in Sterling are also quite affordable. According to Apartments.com's estimates, rent in the area averaged $862 per month in October 2026. Studio apartments sat even lower, at about $674 per month.
