This Grocery Chain Is Promising To Match Walmart And Aldi On Thanksgiving Dinner
As shoppers prepare for Thanksgiving and the holiday season, grocery chains are looking for ways to attract customers and their holiday spending. For Thanksgiving 2026, you might want to turn your attention to German discount grocer Lidl, which is taking on Aldi and Walmart in the competition for cheaper groceries. In an October 13 press release, Lidl announced that it would match the total price of comparable Thanksgiving dinner baskets offered by either chain. To be clear, Lidl won't match prices on individual items, but it will lower the overall basket price if either competitor advertises a comparable Thanksgiving meal deal for less. The offer runs from November 11 through November 25 and is only available to Lidl Plus members.
Lidl's Thanksgiving basket costs $35.86 for up to 10 people, which works out to about $3.59 per person. For comparison, Aldi's 2026 Thanksgiving basket costs $38.74, according to Grocery Dive, putting Lidl's total $2.88 lower. Walmart, meanwhile, hasn't announced its 2026 Thanksgiving basket price as of this writing. If it repeats its affordable Thanksgiving turkey deal from 2025 at $39.93, Lidl's basket would be $4.07 cheaper. However, these baskets aren't identical, with differences in both the products and quantities included. For instance, Aldi's offer includes a 16-pound turkey, while Lidl's advertised price is based on a 14-pound bird. The ingredients differ, too. Lidl includes two boxes of macaroni and cheese and two boxes of stuffing, while Aldi's has three boxes of stuffing and frozen peas but no macaroni and cheese.
What you need to know about Lidl's Thanksgiving deal
Like other retail chains that offer member-only savings, you'll need to be an active Lidl Plus member to get the Thanksgiving deal, which runs from November 11 through November 25. The good news is that joining Lidl Plus is free, so it won't cost you extra. However, the Thanksgiving promotion's terms and conditions require you to scan the app at checkout. Each account is limited to one Thanksgiving basket at the promotional price, so you can't use the same membership to claim the deal multiple times. If you want a turkey larger than the 14-pounder that comes with the offer by default, it will raise your total at checkout.
You might also want to remember that taxes and local fees aren't included in the advertised price, and orders through third-party delivery services such as Instacart are excluded. The promotion also runs only while supplies last, with no rain checks. That means you won't be able to reserve the promotional price for later if products sell out during the offer period — you'll have to get your cash ready beforehand.
Lastly, you may also not be able to use only the basket for Thanksgiving dinner. Lidl includes pure pumpkin, evaporated milk, and pie-crust dough; it doesn't include eggs, cinnamon, sugar, and salt — ingredients needed for most pumpkin pie recipes. If your pantry is already stocked, you might have everything else you need. But if you're starting from scratch, expect to spend a little more to complete the meal.
