The Hidden Costs Of Owning A Toyota RAV4 That Buyers Don't Expect

Add Money Digest on Google:

The Toyota RAV4 is one of America's most popular SUVs, with Toyota reporting that more than 6.4 million RAV4s have been sold in the U.S. since 1996. Additionally, experts and customers alike maintain that the vehicle is dependable, earning it a spot among the best-selling cars that are also the most reliable. However, nothing is perfect and more recent RAV4 model years have had issues with roof leaks, hybrid wiring, and newer safety features — all of which can make repair costs more expensive than a buyer might expect.

That said, just how much these issues can cost you depends on which RAV4 you own and whether Toyota decides to cover the repair outside of a warranty. For instance, costly roof-rail leaks tend to occur in certain 2019 to 2021 RAV4s and RAV4 Hybrids, and in 2021 RAV4 Primes. Before Toyota decided to cover this repair regardless of warranty, one 2019 owner reported that a dealer quoted $1,300 to fix just one side.

Another potential repair bill involves certain 2019 through 2024 AWD RAV4 Hybrids and 2021 through 2024 Primes in which corrosion can eat a high-voltage cable that connects to the rear motor. Owners in a U.S. lawsuit alleged replacement bills of $4,200 to $7,000. Also, while modern RAV4s come with upgraded safety features, these can add hidden costs as well. For instance, Toyota reports that the RAV4's front camera needs recalibration after, say, replacing your windshield. Specialist charges for this service can start at $249, on top of the cost of the glass replacement.

Every 2026 RAV4 comes with a one-year Toyota Remote Connect trial. Depending on trim, this feature lets you use the Toyota app to lock the car doors, locate the vehicle, or even start it remotely. It also includes a Digital Key feature on supported trims, which lets you and selected phones access the car without the key fob. However, once the trial ends, the least expensive Toyota plan that includes Remote Connect costs $15 a month, or $180 a year. For buyers financing the SUV, that's another recurring charge on top of the monthly payment for a 2026 RAV4.

Additionally, that $15 monthly plan can also include Drive Connect, which provides cloud navigation, voice assistance, and help finding destinations. Want the car's Wi-Fi hotspot, too? Toyota lists that separately at $25 a month. Maintaining both Drive Connect and Wi-Fi would add $40 a month, or $480 a year, to your car budget. While that may not seem like a lot at first, it's a good example of the latte effect — small recurring expenses that add up over time.
