4 Of The 5 Cars With The Best Gas Mileage In 2026 Have One Thing In Common

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA), motor-gasoline expenditure averaged $1,334 per person (about 400 gallons) in 2024, when regular gasoline cost an average of $3.31 per gallon. With the national average climbing above $4 per gallon in August 2026, buying the same 400 gallons would cost more than $1,600. However, choosing the right car can reduce your gasoline spending. Driving 10,000 miles at $4 per gallon costs $1,600 in a 25-miles per gallon (mpg) car but only $800 in one returning 50 mpg. That makes Car and Driver's list of 2026 cars with the best gas mileage a useful money-saving tool for car shoppers — and four of its top five models have one thing in common: They are Toyotas.

Toyota's dominance of the ranking didn't happen overnight. After bringing the 41-mpg Prius to the U.S. in 2000, the company introduced the Camry Hybrid in 2006, launched the Prius Plug-in Hybrid in 2012, and added a Corolla Hybrid for the 2020 model year. Toyota then made the Camry exclusively hybrid for 2025. Those moves combined with some efficiency engineering eventually earned it four places in Car and Driver's 2026 top five. The 2026 Prius, which also topped U.S. News' mileage ranking, returns up to 57 mpg combined city and highway, followed by the Prius PHEV at 52 mpg in hybrid operation, the Camry at 51 mpg, and the Corolla Hybrid at 50 mpg. Only the Hyundai Elantra prevents a full Toyota sweep. 

Put another way, driving 10,000 miles in one of these Toyotas would require roughly 175 to 200 gallons of gas, compared with 400 gallons in a vehicle that gets 25 mpg.

While the Prius leads these Toyotas in fuel economy, the Corolla Hybrid may be the better choice for buyers focused on long-term costs. According to the American Automobile Association (AAA) analysis, fuel represented about one-sixth of the average cost of owning and operating a new vehicle. The Corolla Hybrid is Kelley Blue Book's most affordable hybrid car of 2026 because it combines 50-mpg fuel efficiency with a starting price of $26,270, including fees. KBB also estimates that the Corolla Hybrid will cost $42,180 to own over five years, compared with $46,035 for the Prius and $52,679 for the Camry. That makes the Corolla Hybrid $3,855 cheaper to own than the Prius and $10,499 cheaper than the Camry over five years.

That said, these figures don't apply equally to every Corolla Hybrid, as the quoted $26,270 starting price belongs to the front-wheel-drive LE. It is also one of only two trims rated at 50 mpg combined. Adding all-wheel drive to the LE reduces its rating to 48 mpg, while the SE returns 47 mpg with front-wheel drive and 44 mpg with all-wheel drive. The XLE matches the LE's 50 mpg, but its $30,635 starting price is $4,365 higher. Among these trims, the front-wheel-drive LE offers the lowest starting price while still delivering one of the Corolla Hybrid's highest fuel-economy ratings. The broader Corolla line also has an average five-year depreciation rate of 31.4%, compared with 45.6% for vehicles overall, which could help protect more of your money when you eventually sell or trade it in.
