One Pizza Hut AI Decision Is Being Blamed For Over $100 Million In Losses
For several years, AI has had a major impact on various industries as of 2026. Despite consumer research showing that customers tend to be turned off by the technology, it's even made its way into the world of food service — and it turns out consumers aren't the only ones feeling the AI ick. Chaac Pizza Northeast, a franchisee that owns 111 Pizza Hut locations across states in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, filed suit against Pizza Hut on May 6, 2026, claiming the mandatory implementation of AI in its operations has created a slew of serious problems.
According to a copy of Chaac Pizza Northeast's lawsuit obtained by The Register, the lawsuit was filed in the business court of Texas and accuses Pizza Hut LLC of disrupting the franchisee's business. Specifically, Chaac alleges Pizza Hut's mandatory rollout of the Dragontail AI delivery-management system caused system failures, harmed customer relationships, lost sales, and incurred more than $100 million in damages. Although major restaurant chains struggling in the 2020s is nothing new, Chaac claims it was one of the chain's top-performing franchisees prior to the AI implementation, achieving impressive sales and top-tier delivery metrics. In an emailed statement to Restaurant Dive regarding the lawsuit, Pizza Hut said it was in the process of reviewing the matter and would not comment on pending litigation.
Chaac alleges the AI unfavorably altered delivery practices
Although various AI-caused issues were alleged in Chaac's lawsuit, one of the more prominent ones was that Dragontail allowed gig-labor delivery drivers to take advantage of the technology to pick up more orders at once. Of course, the concept of stacking orders is nothing new for delivery app drivers. This practice can help bring in more pay for the driver and mitigate the fact that Doordash takes its own percentage out of the driver's pay. However, Chaac alleges that this resulted in orders sitting for long periods of time before delivery. Before Dragontail came along, Chaac claims, its restaurants relied on DoorDash for all of their deliveries and saw 90% of these orders reaching its customers' doors within 30 minutes or less. Once Dragontail went into effect, however, the wait times increased as the algorithm allowed delivery drivers more insight into when new orders were coming in, causing them to strategize their pickups to the detriment of the company.
Although it's unclear exactly how much Chaac's locations lost in sales and when, the lawsuit states that Drangontail was integrated into Pizza Huts in the franchisee's area between 2023 and 2024, and Pizza Hut LLC never contacted the company to address its declining performance thereafter.
