This Nostalgic McDonald's Toy Line From The '80s Is Worth A Lot In 2026

McDonald's Happy Meals have long been known for their pop culture tie-ins, especially when it comes to the toys that come with them. But in 1987, the burger franchise skirted an official partnership by introducing a lineup of Happy Meal toys called Changeables. Clearly inspired by the popular "Transformers" toys and cartoon, the fast food giant released little plastic versions of different McDonald's menu items that could be reshaped into robots. And much like the Happy Meal toys McDonald's released in partnership with Marvel, Changeables are now worth a lot more than the less-than $2 a Happy Meal cost in the '80s.

Multiple versions of Changeables have come and gone over the years, and some of the originals — released periodically from 1987 to 1990 — have done pretty well on the collectors market. If you happen to have any of them, you might be able to change them into extra cash. Some of the early collections actually sell for upwards of $300 or more, and one collection from 1988 even sold for $599.99 in 2026. Seeing as there are over 290,000 results for "McDonald's Happy Meal toys" on eBay (and hundreds more on Etsy) as of this writing, the modern demand for these and other vintage McDonalds toys is clearly there.

How to tell what your Changeables toys are actually worth

If you've got Changeables to sell, it's crucial to look not at just the live listing prices, but at what previous ones actually sold for. Anyone can hop online and charge whatever they want, but that won't guarantee a sale. As for what you can realistically make, it varies a lot. The 1988 set that sold for $600 is an exception, not a rule. To get the most value for your Changeables no matter what you have, make sure they're in good condition. It also helps if you're already an established seller with some decent marketing skills.

A full Changeables collection from 1987, which featured a lineup of six toys each named after the foods they resembled — Big Mac, Milk Shake, Egg McMuffin, Quarter Pounder, French Fries, and Chicken McNuggets — often sells for around $80.00 and upwards. The 1988 and 1989 sets often sell for between $30 and $100, depending on their condition and how many of the characters are included in the listing. The 1990 sets — which swapped out the robots for dinosaurs – tend to go for around $65. However, one collection featuring vintage Happy Meal toy bags and toys in their original packaging sold for closer to $100 in 2026. Countertop displays can command even more. For example, a recent sale of the 1989 countertop display with all eight toys from that year sold for $175, while the 1990 Dino version sold for $349.99.

A new Changesables generation may increase the originals' value

In early 2026, McDonald's resurrected the Changeables franchise. The official McDonald's Happy Meal Instagram account announced the new toys' release at participating McDonald's starting January 27, revealing updated robot and dinosaur versions. The toys' "finale" was announced via the same account in late February. These toys have already hit the resale market, though the selling prices are considerably lower than their vintage counterparts. As of May 2026, the highest any have sold for on eBay is $300 — and that was a sealed case stuffed with 150 toys. Individual figures are meanwhile selling for between $1 and $7.

The new batch's presence could nevertheless help boost sales of the vintage toys simply by drawing more attention to the rarer versions. A single Changeable might not sell for hundreds of dollars like a first-generation Transformers autobot, but units from the '80s and '90s are now selling for around $13. While that's a long way from the over $2,000 one 1990s McDonald's toy sold for, if you got a Changeable with a Happy Meal in the late '80s, you might still make a profit even accounting for inflation.
