How Much Money The Average Costco Shopper Spends Per Trip
Costco membership has nearly doubled since 2014, when the company had just 76.4 million paid members. According to data from Statista, the warehouse grocery chain's paid memberships in 2025 stand at 145.2 million. These paid club cardholders help the discount retailer earn customer loyalty, a big reason why Costco's sales continue to grow year after year. Revenue from memberships alone earned Costco over $5.3 billion from September 2024 to August 2025. While this may be a drop in the bucket compared to the company's total fiscal-year revenue of $275.2 billion, it's nothing to scoff at, either. A typical Costco Gold Star membership costs $65 per year, whereas the Executive membership card comes at an annual price of $130.
If you're one of these paid Costco members, you might wonder how your shopping habits compare to those of others who frequent the grocery chain. As of 2025, data collection agency Numerator reports that the average Costco shopper visits the store approximately 33 times a year, spending $3,213 over the course of those visits. That comes out to slightly under $100 per trip. That's a slight increase from 2024, when Business Insider reports Numerator found that customers averaged 30 trips per year, spending $3,018 in that time. That still comes out to about $100, and while those yearly averages have seen a slight increase, the fact that Costco shoppers are still reliably spending about the same amount per trip bodes well for those who plan their budgets around the shopping at the warehouse store.
What products are people spending the most on at Costco?
You obviously know what you're spending money on at Costco, but what does the average shopper buy on a trip to this bulk retailer? There are definitely items smart shoppers should stock up on at Costco for the best deals. For example, coffee, chocolate, pasta, and a range of different cooking oils could be worth a trip on their own. However, you can also get some great Costco food products for $5 or less, such as blackberries, bananas, certain spices and breads, and the company's famous Kirkland Signature rotisserie chicken. Of course, it may be hard not to splurge on a few extras if you get drawn in by any of the enticing samples being handed out the day you visit.
Costco offers many non-food items at a great value as well. Gas is an especially popular Costco purchase, as the retailer often gets its members some of the lowest fuel prices you can find. Depending on your location and how often you go, the savings you get filling up at Costco throughout the year could pay for your membership on their own. Another one of the store's bestsellers is Kirkland Signature toilet paper — which makes sense. Everyone needs a constant supply of this item, and it's something many households and businesses like to stock up on so they never run out. For many, Costco is apparently the place to go for this expense, as the store brings in a mind-boggling $400 million in revenue from this one staple alone, according to CNBC.
