Pleasant Company: the name strikes admiration into the hearts of countless millennials, and has made a sizable dent in many parents' wallets. Pleasant Company launched its own independent line of historically accurate American Girl dolls and accompanying books in 1986. Now, the Mattel-owned American Girl company still sells a popular and extensive line of dolls, books, and accessories that dedicated fans will shell out a pretty penny to own. And while American Girl dolls aren't the only dolls that can be worth a ton of money, one American Girl doll in particular could earn you some revolutionary sums.

Felicity Merriman may still be considered a "new" American Girl Doll to most millennials, having made her debut in 1991. She was initially retired in 2011, though she was briefly brought back in 2017 before being retired again in 2019. While another Felicity Merriman doll came out in 2021 as part of a 35th Anniversary collection, Felicity has not been in production since. These days, some Felicity dolls can sell for over $1,000 — and many others have sold on eBay for between $200 and $300.

Known for her sprite and spunk, Felicity tried to find her own independence while living in colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. With stories and accessories set in 1770s America, Felicity helped young American Girl fans learn American history in the lead-up to the Revolutionary War decades before the hit musical "Hamilton" started captivating audiences.

Why Felicity Merriman is so coveted by American Girl fans

While Felicity only made her debut after the original trio of Kirsten, Samantha, and Molly, she was perhaps the first American Girl doll's inspiration. Pleasant Rowland, the founder of Pleasant Company and creator of American Girl Dolls, spent time in Colonial Williamsburg. Rowland's fascination with the town played a big part in her starting the historically focused American Girl line, and Felicity was the first American Girl with a backstory based in that area.

By 1998, Rowland had built Pleasant Company into a business doing $300 million in sales. She then sold it to Mattel, the manufacturer of some surprisingly valuable Barbie dolls, for $700 million in 1998. Of course, most kids paging through the rock-album sized Pleasant Company catalogue knew nothing of the big business going on behind the pages. They just knew they loved the 18-inch dolls and their historically-accurate outfits and accessories — and many still love Felicity. Today, grown-up fans have dedicated message board pages, fan fiction pages, and blog posts to Felicity Merriman. While many collectors of Felicity dolls had versions as a child, others may have only enjoyed the books and are only building a collection years later.

Valuable Felicity dolls and accessories

Many people collect Felicity Merriman American Girl dolls, from the casual collector posting on social media to those in search of exact models. Doll collectors also buy and sell dolls to restore parts, or to hunt for specific accessories. So, much like with sports collectibles likely to increase in value, if you have a Felicity Merriman doll — or even some of its components — it's worth checking out what's for sale at trade shows and online auction sites to see if you could get a little cash for it. Everyone's trash is someone else's treasure — and generations of Felicity dolls regularly sell on eBay for $150 or more. In fact, a 1991 set of Felicity Merriman's writing lesson accessories sold for $200 on eBay in 2025 — and they didn't even come with a doll.

The 2017 BeForever Felicity doll with a blue-and-yellow brocade gown, made by Mattel, often sells for $150. Many 1991 Pleasant Company Felicity dolls sell in the same range, often in Felicity's long rose garden-print dress. Felicity's supposedly rarest dress, her "Town Fair" outfit with a red apron over a blue print, sold for $118 on eBay in 2025.

A 1991 Felicity doll with dress in great condition also sold on eBay for $350 in 2025, while another 1991 doll with nine complete outfits sold for $599.99. A rare retired Felicity by Pleasant Company, complete with writing desk and writing accessories, even sold for a whopping $1,850 in 2025.
