Bankrate Says This Is The Best State For Retirees In 2025
Over 10,000 Americans turn 65 each day, reaching the typical retirement age in the United States — although not all people are financially ready to retire, regardless of age, with debt being a major factor. This being said, a July 2025 Bankrate report outlined the best state for retirees in 2025, with affordability ranking as one of the main factors in their decision. Surprisingly, Bankrate did not give classic retirement states like Florida the nod, instead dubbing New Hampshire the best state for retirees.
This New England state was crowned as part of an extensive report compiled by the nationally recognized lender. The Bankrate report utilized a national opinion poll to identify and categorize different factors that most affect retirees. Part of this process meant that things like affordability, weather, and tax structure greatly determined New Hampshire's ranking — while simultaneously tanking the ratings of states like Texas and Florida. With a relatively low cost of living and a tax structure that allows retirees to leverage more of their social security dollars, New Hampshire has a lot to offer — especially its historic state capital, Concord. In fact the state only charges a 3% tax on interest and dividends, allowing retirees to enjoy more of their Social Security benefits.
How to enjoy retirement in New Hampshire
When it comes to which specific cities in the state that retirees should consider, there are great options for those who enjoy cities or for those who prefer the more remote feel of a smaller town. The state's capital of Concord, New Hampshire, has a population of roughly 44,000 people while, on the smaller side with just 10,000 people, Exeter, New Hampshire is another great choice for retirees. Located just an hour from Boston via car, Exeter is community driven and has a median property value of $349,300. In addition to its historical significance, Exeter is also highly walkable, with Walk Score giving it an 85-point walkability rating.
How one might fill their time in retirement is another important consideration when contemplating a move to New Hampshire. Luckily, the state offers plenty of free choices, regardless of where in the state you might end up. With Mount Washington sitting neatly in the center of the state, residents can easily take advantage of the natural beauty of the highest peak in the Northeast. Or, for those who are looking to take in the state's less extreme views, there are also several libraries and National Historic sites, including Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park, which costs just $10 to enter, or $20 for a Senior Annual Pass to all National Park Service lands and attractions.
