A McDonald's Toy Set From 1998 Is Worth Way More Money Today (But There's A Catch)

Being a kid and going to McDonald's is a special kind of treat — especially if you get a Happy Meal with a toy in it. If that was your childhood in the 1990s, and you now find yourself re-assessing the memorabilia you collected as you grew up, there's a good chance your McDonald's Happy Meal toys are now worth a ton of money. Everything from Disney promotional tie-ins to the launch of video game characters have found their way into a Happy Meal box, but one set in particular is valued highly today, if you can catch them all.

No, it's not Pokémon cards, even though many of them are worth a pretty penny, it's Furbies — the infamous toys that are either cute and cuddly or, depending on your fear threshold, creepy. Furby Toy Shop notes that individual McDonald's Furby toys, which were released in 1998, can start at $30 on the resale market. However limited editions, and one of a kind variations of the toys, such as "Pink Crystal" and "Rusty Dots" for example, can be worth top dollar on the collectibles market. If you still have some Furby toys stored away in the basement or attic, it might be time to open some boxes.

How much people are currently paying for Furbies

Nearly thirty years ago, Furbies were incredibly popular and everyone wanted at least one, but you did not need to shell out hundreds of dollars to buy the toys. According to Family Pickers the average price of a Furby in the 90s was about $35 and, over time, due to their rarity and nostalgia, tend to sell for about $100 to $300 — though one Bejeweled Furby is estimated to potentially be worth over $10,000.

A special, limited edition "Angel Furby" is currently listed on eBay for $600 while others, like a "Kids Cuisine" Furby, is listed for a whopping $39,999. With that said, another Kids Cuisine Furby, in an unopened box, actually sold for $520. Meanwhile a rainbow-colored Furby, with the tags still attached, sold for $365, according to Today. These and several other hard to find editions are some of the rarest Furbies that are worth tons of money today.

The catch that comes with McDonald's Furby set from 1998

Many different McDonald's toys from the 1990s are worth a lot of money and Furbies are no exception. However, what makes McDonald's Furby release stand out from other Happy Meal toys, not to mention a bit harder to collect, is that there are 80 total in the complete set. And, according to Work and Money, each Furby was only worth roughly $1 a piece when a full set sold for $100 in 2022.

Aside from being able to find all of the different McDonald's Furbies, certain factors can drive the price up or down on these toys. These details can include the condition that they have been kept in for nearly three decades, as well as if they are still in their original packaging, or have any manufacturing errors. At that point, the Furbies could be even rarer and more valuable to buyers eager to soak up a piece of their childhood, even for a several hundred dollars.
